High quality basics that don’t leave you in eco-debt

Sosume is all about being sustainable. As the lovechild of 4 young designers collaborating between Melbourne, Sydney and New York, Sosume is a new international brand with a major social-conscience. Their campaign is to produce wardrobe essentials that are of the highest quality fabric and design, but that also give back to the environment.

From their collections, it is evident that for Sosume, style and sustainability are synonymous. They source only the finest eco-friendly fabrics from the most environmentally-friendly mills across the world, and as a result their lightweight garments are not only beautifully woven, but are also organic and natural. And it feels divine. The micromodal used in their most recent collection is both luxurious to the touch and only requires one tenth of the water used in cotton production. If this wasn’t good enough, modal is resistant to fading and shrinkage, making Sosume’s garments a profound response to the environmental threat of mass-production in the fashion industry.

The essentials that constitute their collection epitomize easy elegance. The minimalist shapes of their semi-translucent tops mean they can be easily thrown on over jeans, or dressed up with metallics. Their tonal colour palette of white, grey, charcoal and black make their garments timelessly stylish, and one-shoulder pieces and rompers with slits in the sleeves are effortlessly sexy. The fabric design blends both knits and wovens to make the garments lightweight, irresistibly soft and elegantly sheer.

Sosume’s investment in the environment is at the extreme end of green. They ensure that 3% of the proceeds from each garment go to charities for sustainable development. Even the tag that comes on the garment is a seed that the owner can plant, enabling them to contribute to Sosume’s sustainable mantra from their own home.

Sosume have achieved a strong, relaxed collection, crafting elegance by draping translucent fabric over the human form to produce a sexy and wearable silhouette, showing that one does not have to sacrifice style to contribute to sustainability.
