About the designer, Aung:

I was born in Burma. My family are Kar-en – the tribal people with long necks. Ever since I was a child I wanted to create, surrounded as I was by native patterns, colours, textures and the rich history of my country.  I watched my elders weave and mix colours, it fascinated and inspired me.

At 16 after a long journey to the Thai border, began the long road to fulfilling my dreams.

I arrived in Australia in 2002.

Studied fashion at St George TAFE and was fortunate to be a finalist in the annual TAFE Awards where I attracted the attention of  Mr Akira Isogawa. During the six months working with Akira on two collections I learnt some valuable insights into the fashion industry.

2005 saw me work at Longina Phillips Designs with a vibrant team and the new technology of digital printing. Being in charge of a new department with the guidance and wisdom of Lola, I explored and learnt new techniques about designing, production and marketing.

In March 2008 I began to work on my own. I want to prove that a poor Burmese boy can make it in this world – if anything, that is my driving force. Today I am living my childhood dream, without forgetting my humble beginnings – that is why everything I create has an invisible thread of Burmese spirit running through it.
